CREATIVE MATH VIDEOS & TUTORING BY COLLEGE MATH PROFESSOR
About Me

My name is Steven Gottlieb. I attended the College of Staten Island of The City University of New York from 1986-1990 where I earned my BS degree in mathematics under my advisor, Dr. M Sormani. While at CSI I worked as a math tutor in the college's math lab under Prof L Blois and at the SEEK center. I also did private math tutoring during these four years. After surviving the vigorous coursework at CSI I worked as a private math tutor full time from 1990-1994. At that time I entered a MA program in mathematics at the historic City College of New York of The City University of New York. While at CCNY I worked closely with my advisor, Dr K Hrbacek, until I earned my MA in May 1995. Although CSI had high standards, it was at CCNY where I was required to do more and better work than I was able to. I remember Dr Hrbacek's reply when I asked him why I never get an A grade on my homework assignments- when students with weaker homework assignments did receive A grades-his reply was "I know you could do better". I've never seen a school with higher standards than CCNY. I have very fond memories of my times at both CSI and CCNY, especially CSI. CSI clearly brought out my math talent and CCNY honed in on it.
After finishing at CCNY I adjuncted at many colleges in NYC from 1995-1999 while maintaining my tutoring business. In 1999 I landed my first full-time community college teaching job and have been teaching at various community colleges ever since.
In 2001 I pioneered doing live online math tutoring in he US and it wasn't until 2005 when I started making math videos. My first video produced was pre algebra and in 2007 I started making prep videos which has a been a huge success. I have some great ideas to work on for 2010!
